Denominational S.I.N. PDF Print
Written by Joe Engelbird

Attempting to engage a member of a religious denomination in a Bible discussion can be frustrating. At issue is the fact that many sincere people miss the simple truths taught in scripture. Often these discussions result in S.I.N.

The S in that acronym stands for Shift of topics. When a teaching from the Bible clearly contradicts a tenet of their religious belief they change the subject. For example, on the subject of baptism, which the Bible teaches washes away our sins (Acts 22:16), many from the religious world change the subject to grace or faith. Surely these are important but neither will wash away sins.

The I in S.I.N. indicates the tendency of members of a religious denominations to Ignore the facts as presented in the Bible.   For example, when the scripture clearly teaches there is only one church (Matthew 16:18, Acts 2:47, Colossians 1:18) this simple doctrine is ignored. Instead they proclaim that there are many avenues to reach the truth.

Finally, the N represents Name calling which those in denominations often do. Derogatory names such as “five steppers” and “Pharisee” are often hurled at members of the Lord’s church by the religious world. Despite the names, the Bible clearly outlines steps that lead to salvation. Furthermore no member of the church, that I am aware of has, ever sought to teach for doctrines the commandments of men (Matthew 15:9).

Unfortunately Shifting topics, Ignoring facts and Name calling are the resort of many we try to reach with the gospel. During His earthly ministry Jesus was treated much the same way. Perhaps we should rejoice that we, like the early church, are counted worthy to suffer shame for his name (Acts 5:41). We should follow their example and not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ (Acts 5:42).
